A scholarship in memory of a longtime Scott County educator was recently established at East Central Community College in Decatur.

The Huey G. Stone Memorial Scholarship honors the former Lake High School principal who retired in 1999 following 32 years of service. Stone was a resident of Lake from 1961 until his death in 2013.

The scholarship was established by family, friends and former students of Mr. Stone in honor of "his love for education, which was spread to thousands of students during his tenure."

To make contributions to endow the scholarship, contact the ECCC Foundation at 601-635-6327.

Stone graduated from Harperville High School prior to enrolling at ECCC in 1957. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and later earned three masters' degrees from Mississippi State University.

The recipient of the Huey G. Stone Memorial Scholarship will be selected annually by the ECCC Scholarship Committee and recognized at the AT&T Scholarship Appreciation Luncheon held each summer.

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must be a graduate of Lake High School; have a minimum 2.5 grade point average entering ECCC; must be a fulltime student at ECCC and taking classes with an emphasis in education; and must possess leadership qualities. Preference will be given to applicants with a financial need.
