A Philadelphia man was charged with murder Friday afternoon in connection with the shooting death of 22-year-old Marquai Kirkland, whose body was found Tuesday night along a gravel road near Northside Park.
A Ford Explorer seized in connection with the case.
Samuel Amos, 40, of 521 Valley View Dr., was charged with murder. He was also charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.
April Brown, 35, of 521 Valley View Dr., was charged on Friday with accessory after the fact.
Chief of Police Grant Myers said a warrant to search the Valley View Drive residence was executed Thursday by Philadelphia Police and the state Bureau of Investigation.
"A 2002 Ford Explorer was seized from the residence along with items believed to be of evidential value," Myers said.
The vehicle was processed by a forensic scientist with the state Bureau of Investigation, the Chief said.
"That evidence, along with evidence recovered Tuesday night and throughout the investigation, led to the two arrests."
The Ford Explorer, which has a missing window on the passenger side, was sought by police early in the investigation, Myers said.
It was registered to Brown.
"I'm proud of the way our investigators handled the case," Myers said. "I'm thankful that MBI was eager to assist us. We received a lot of information about this case and we appreciate the community getting involved."
More arrests are possible as the case remains under investigation, Myers said.
Anyone with additional information was asked to call the PD at 601-656-2131 or Crime Stoppers at 1-855-485-8477.
Kirkland's body was found off Parkside Drive by a passerby just before 6 p.m.
A vacant house and trailer are near where the body was found and an occupied dwelling is less than a mile away.
Myers doesn't believe the man had been dead very long.
The State Crime Lab helped process the crime scene up until about midnight.
The body was found a quarter mile down Parkside Drive, which is a gravel road just north of Northside Park off old Mississippi 15.
Kirkland, of 424 Evergreen St., was charged in 2013 with the attempted murder of Robert Yarbrough, 37, of 256 Adams St.
Kirkland is charged with shooting Yarbrough one time in the right bicep with an unknown caliber gun as he was trying to enter his home about 10 p.m., police said.
Kirkland's record also extended to burglary.
In 2010 he received three indictments for burglary of a motor vehicle.
He began serving six years in July 2010.
