A man was airlifted directly to a Jackson hospital after being injured in a motor vehicle accident Wednesday evening.

Philadelphia Fire Chief Pierce Clark said the accident occurred on Mississippi 19 south around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday when two vehicles, a car and truck, collided. The vehicles were traveling in opposite directions.

After the collision, he said, the wheel assembly from the truck came off and struck a third vehicle.

Rescue crews had to cut away the roof and both driver side doors of the car to remove a trapped male who was pinned from the waist down.

After being extricated, the male was taken to House Grocery and airlifted directly to the University Medical Center in Jackson.

The cause of the accident has not been determined.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol on Wednesday evening would not release the names of any of the victims.
