For the eighth time in 10 years, Richard Goldman has come away from the Heart O' Dixie triathlon with the Dickey Nowell Memorial Award. The award goes to the top finisher from Neshoba County.
From left are Will Davis, John Kennedy Nowell, John Nowell and Richard Goldman, who won the Dickey Nowell award for the eighth time.
The 28-year old Philadelphia native is nothing if not consistent, winning the award for the third year in a row after Derek Crenshaw won it in 2011.
His time this year was 2:14:34.
"I've competed in this since I graduated high school," Goldman said. "I normally start running around January, then start riding when it gets warm enough. I train about four or five times a week."
His eight victories as top Neshoba County competitor puts him in elite company, tying John Williams for the most Nowell awards since its inception in 1990.
The relevance of the award is not lost on Goldman.
"It's something to look forward to each year, something to train for," he said. "It's kind of a race within itself. For the hometown boys, its something everyone wants to win, so it's a big honor.
The award is given by Heart O' Dixie sponsor Philadelphia Sertoma Club.
It is given in memory of Nowell, a former resident of Neshoba County who passed away in 1989 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Nowell was not a member of the Sertoma Club but was a friends to many of its members at the time.
He competed each year in the Heart O' Dixie until his health prevented him from doing so.
