Frank Hutton says hard work, dedication and doing things the right way will be his guide as he begins his coaching career at Philadelphia High School.

He will be the girls slow-pitch softball coach during the fall, and head baseball coach in the spring for the Tornado teams.

Hutton grew up in Pearl. He played baseball as long as he can remember. He played at Pearl High School where he was also the quarterback of the football team. He went on to play two seasons at Meridian Community College and a season at the University of Southern Mississippi. Then a shoulder injury in summer league ball ended his playing days.

“My coaches guided me into to coaching,” Hutton said. “All my life, baseball gave me structure and I learned to do the things  right. That’s what I plan to bring to my teams.

“If you work hard every day and do things the right way, good things will happen. There may be some games when you don’t get a hit. You have to keep working at it.”

Hutton said he is excited about his opportunity at Philadelphia. He was hired at the end of June and is learning his way around.

“I have been told softball is a big sport in this area,” Hutton said. “Philadelphia has won state championships in softball in the past and we will be trying to win another ring this season.

“I have been looking at the stats from the last baseball season and there are some guys on the team who can hit and make plays. There is potential,” Hutton said.

“With both teams, we will respect the game, play with good sportsmanship and play hard,” Hutton said. “We will set goals and try to reach those goals. Our ultimate goal will be to win the state championship. I hope I can come in and provide energy, enthusiasm and good direction for each sport.”

Hutton plans to meet with parents and the players sometime this week or next. He has already started working on the fields at Burnside, getting them ready for the upcoming season.

“I love team sports,” Hutton said. “I love being around people who are motivated and working for the same goal. Every team I have played for was like family and I hope we will have that atmosphere here.”

While at Southern Miss, Hutton was a student coach at Petal High School and Pearl High School. He will teach social studies at Philadelphia High School.
