Lady Rockets stay focused on task at hand

Trae Embry is making no predictions about what kind of season his Neshoba Central Lady Rockets slow-pitch softball team will have this fall.
There is no reason to think the Lady Rockets won't be as dominating as ever. They only lost two starters off of last year's 34-1 team. And, they have 31 players on the roster, most of whom play softball year around. That should make finding two new starters fairly easy. In fact, Neshoba Central's junior varsity team could probably go deep into the playoffs themselves, if that were possible.
The Lady Rockets have won the state slow-pitch softball champion for Class 5A-6A for the past two years and they are starting up again Saturday when they host their annual jamboree.
"We aren't thinking about winning a third state championship," Embry said. "That's not how we do things. We think about what we are doing today. We want to get better every day, whether in practice or in a game.
"I'm not sure what our starting lineup will end up being. We are looking at things. If we take care of our business, the rest will take care of itself."
Anchoring the infield will be senior Hailey Lunderman at shortstop. Other returning starters include Mallory Tucker at pitcher; Kayla Robertson at first, Madalyn McMahon at third base, and outfielders Meshay Jimmie, Hannah Williams and Kaila Willis.
"We are looking a several different players to work into the lineup," Embry said. "We may more people around. We are blessed with a lot of depth and we are looking for the best way to use it."
Following the jamboree, Neshoba Central will play two games in the Newton County Classic next Saturday. They then start playing their very competitive schedule.
"The only way to get better is to play against good competition," Embry said.
