The Union Lady Yellowjackets fast-pitch softball team won one-of-four games last week as they took on two of the top teams in the state.

The Lady Yellowjackets dropped 17-0 decision to Newton County last Tuesday. They then split a pair of games with Northeast Lauderdale, losing 10-7 last Friday and winning out 10-0 Saturday in the Union tournament. They closed out the tournament with a 10-3 loss to defending 2A state champion Taylorsville.

The Lady Yellowjackets have three games slated for this week. They were to host Newton County on Monday, Newton High on Tuesday, and Meridian High on Friday.

Union enters the week with a 2-4 record.

The Lady Cougars scored 16 runs in the first inning as they settled this game early.

Newton County had an 18-1 hitting advantage. Mackenzie Dolan had Union’s only hit. Anna Rigdon took the pitching loss.

Northeast Lauderdale came up with a big sixth inning to beat Union.

The Lady Trojans scored one in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and three in the sixth. Union answered with one in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and one in the sixth.

Union had nine fielding errors.

Dolan and Rigdon both hit a double and a single and knocked in two runs. Anna Grace Blount had two hits and one RBI. Lilly Burton, CC Carter, DaShayla Jackson and Britli Cleveland all had one hit.

Cleveland was the losing pitcher.

Anna Rigdon pitched a one-hitter and the Lady Yellowjackets cut down on their errors as they bounced back to beat Northeast Lauderdale.

Union scored one in the second, two in the third, six in the fourth and one in the fifth. Union finished with only two fielding errors.

The Lady Yellowjackets banged out nine hits. Rigdon led with a double and two singles. Parker Breland hit a home run and a single. Lilly Burton hit a triple, and Kayleigh Vance hit a double. Cleveland hit a single.

Union stayed with the defending Class 2A champions for five innings before the Lady Tartars pulled away.

Union scored its three runs in the fifth inning. Taylorsville scored three in the fifth, three in the sixth and six in the seventh.

Taylorsville had a 13-5 hitting edge. Burton and Rigdon both led with a double. Breland hit a single and two RBIs. Dolan and Rigdon both hit a single. Cleveland took the pitching loss.
