The Union Lady Yellowjackets won two of three games last week in prep basketball action as they improved their record to 6-5 on the season.

The Lady Yellowjackets opened the week with a loss to Leake Central 58-29. They bounced back to defeat Newton County 52-49 and Nanih Waiya 55-38.

“The win over Newton County was a big one for us,” Coach Matt Wilbanks said. “I think we are getting better but we just aren’t playing as consistent as we need to.”

The Union boys won one-of-three games. They lost 53-34 to Leake Central and 52-39 to Newton County. They closed out the week with a 66-44 win over Nanih Waiya. The boys entered the week with a 6-5 record.

The Yellowjacket teams were to play at Noxapater on Tuesday. Afterwards, they will be off for the Christmas holidays.

Lady Yellowjackets 29

Leake Central went up 34-20 at the half and limited the Union girls to nine points in the second half to take the win.

Mackenzie Dolan led with 10 points and Parker Breland scored nine.


Lady Yellowjackets 52

Newton County 49

Union came on strong in the second half to take the win over rival Newton County.

The Lady Cougars led 24-17 at the half. Union started closing the gap in the third quarter as they outscored Newton County 18-16 to trail 40-35 going into the final quarter. The Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Cougars 17-9 in the last eight minutes of play to capture the victory.

Dolan led with 16 points and Ansley Rigby added 10.

Nanih Waiya 38

Parker Breland scored a career high 36 points to lead the Lady Yellowjackets over Nanih Waiya.

The game was close in the first half. Union led 14-12 after the first quarter. Both teams scored 11 in the second quarter and the Lady Yellowjackets led 25-23 at the half.

Union took control in the third quarter as they outscored Nanih Waiya 20-9 to lead 45-32 heading into the fourth quarter. Union outscored Nanih Waiya in the final quarter to hold onto the win.

Eryanna Mason added 10 points.


Leake Central 53

Leake Central took the early lead and dominated in their win over Union.

The game was part of the Leake Central Invitational, which was postponed the week before because of the snow. The Yellowjackets were playing without their starting guards who had the flu.

The Gators went up 35-19 at the half and outscored the Yellowjackets 28-15 in the second half.

P.J. Gage led with 12 points while J.T. Vance added 10 points. Casey Morris scored seven.


Newton County 52

The Yellowjackets found themselves down by 17 points early and could not regain the lead.

The Cougars went up 19-2 at the end of the first quarter. Union fought back, outscoring Newton County 15-6 in the second quarter and trailed 26-17 at the half.

Union continued to plug away in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 13-7. Union trailed 33-30 heading into the final quarter. Then Newton County put in 20 fourth quarter points while Union scored nine and Newton County claimed the win.

Vance led with 17 points and Michael McDonald scored 11.


Yellowjackets 60

J.T. Vance scored 30 points to lead the Yellowjackets past Nanih Waiya.

Leading 15-7 after the first quarter, the Yellowjackets outscored Nanih Waiya 19-14 in the second quarter to post a 34-21 halftime lead. Union outpointed Nanih Waiya 26-22 in the second half.

Casey Morris added 11 points.

“The Nanih Waiya game was a good win for us,” Coach Josh Luckett said. “We got down by 17 early against Newton County and it was hard to come back. I thought we played hard but they are so big and they don’t make mistakes.”
