The Leake Academy Rebelettes have certainly gotten their 2014 fast-pitch softball season off to a good start.
Annabell Watkins (55) slides safely into third.
On Saturday, the Rebelettes went 4-0 in the Starkville Academy Invitational. And on Tuesday, they were to open play on their new state-of-the-art softball field
The new field is located next to the north end zone of the football field and is behind the new kindergarten building. It has block dugouts and a brick concession stand. The field is lighted. And instead of wire fencing on the backstop, there will be a net from dugout to dugout behind home plate.
"It really a special place," Coach Doug Jones said. "We are replacing the old field that we have been on since around 2000. It was on borrowed land, about a mile from the campus. This is our field and we are very proud of it."
The team practiced on the new field for the first time last Thursday. The Rebelettes have two home games this week as they were to host Tri-County on Tuesday and Winston Academy on Thursday.
Jones said the team played well in the Starkville tournament.
"We got better in each game," Jones said. "I think we were tired of practicing and wanted to play in a real game situation. That's how you get better."
