The Philadelphia Tornado basketball teams swept their Region 4-2A opponents in games played last week.

Both have a pair of important region games this week as the regular season comes to an end.

The Philadelphia boys defeated Union 66-41 last Tuesday and then downed Scott Central 60-55 on Friday. The Lady Tornadoes, meanwhile, beat Union 49-37 and Scott Central 56-40.

This week, the Tornado teams closed out their regular season home schedule against Union. They then visit Lake to close the regular season.

The Philadelphia boys entered the week with a 14-9 overall record and 5-1 in the region. The Lady Tornadoes stand at 15-8 overall and 4-2 in the region.

The region tournament will be held next week at Union High School.

Philadelphia took control of this game in the second quarter.

The Tornadoes led 16-9 at the end of the first quarter. Philadelphia then outpointed the Yellowjackets 20-6 in the second quarter and carried a 36-15 lead into the halftime. Philadelphia would outscore Union 30-26 in the second half.

Stetson Moore led the Tornadoes with 23 points. Jarron Boler added 18 points while John Scott Carter put in nine points Zabin Hunter scored eight points.

The Tornadoes pulled away from Scott Central in the fourth quarter to take the victory.

Philadelphia led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter. Scott Central outpointed the Tornadoes 18-17 in the second quarter and the game was tied at 25-25 at the half.

Both teams scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. The Tornadoes outpointed the Rebels 21-16 in the final quarter to take the win.

Boler scored 27 points to lead the Tornadoes. Moore added 10 points while Carter and Hunter both scored six points.

“We had a good week,” Coach Michael Tardy said. “You have to be able to play hard and finish games, especially at this point of the season. That’s what we have been working toward and I feel like we are ready for the playoffs.”

Trailing at the half, the Lady Tornadoes came on strong in the second half to take the victory.

Union led 11-7 after the first quarter. Philadelphia outscored Union 10-9 in the second half. At the half, the Lady Yellowjackets led 20-17.

Philadelphia went ahead in the third quarter as they outpointed Union 19-7 in the third quarter. Leading 36-24 heading into the final period, the Lady Tornadoes had a 13-10 scoring edge to put the game away.

Andrika Carter led Union with 13 points. Marsha Hunt and Nia Luckett both added eight points.

Philadelphia took a big lead in the first quarter and held on for the victory.

The Lady Tornadoes went up 22-6 in the first quarter. Scott Central battled back, outpointing Philadelphia 8-7 in the second period. At the half, the Lady Tornadoes led 29-14.

Philadelphia added to their lead, outscoring Scott Central 10-6 in the third quarter. Philadelphia carried a 39-20 lead into the final quarter. In a high scoring quarter, the Lady Rebels had a 20-17 scoring edge but Philadelphia held on for the victory.

Carter led with 11 points while Luckett added 10.

“We have been playing well,” Coach Jason Broom said “With the region tournament coming up, now is the time for us to be playing at our best.”
