Union girls win two region games

It was a big weekend for the Union Lady Yellowjackets as they claimed two Region 5-2A victories.
Union opened the week with a 5-4 win over Lake and then defeated Newton High School 15-0. They dropped a 7-5 non-region decision to Nanih Waiya and a 14-2 loss to Newton County.
The Lady Warriors will be back in action this week as they host Enterprise on Tuesday and Clarkdale on Thursday. They host an invitational tournament on Saturday.
Union enters the week with a 3-2 region record and 4-14 overall.
The Lady Yellowjackets came on strong in the mid-innings to defeat Lake.
They scored three in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Lake answered with two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. Anna Rigdon was the winning pitcher. McKenzie Dolan and Lilly Burton both had two hits while Averi Pender hit a double.
Newton High 0
Union came back to blank Newton as they scored two in the first, five in the second and eight in the third. Rigdon was the winning pitcher. Pender hit a triple and a home run to lead Union while Burton added a double and a single. Haley Morgan hit a triple.
Nanih Waiya 7
Nanih Waiya scored three in the sixth to slip past the Lady Yellowjackets. Dolan hit a triple and Kristen Kennedy added a double.
Newton County 14
The Lady Yellowjackets then dropped a 14-2 decision to Newton County. Kennedy, Pender, Macy Knight and Parker Breland all hit a single.
