The Union Yellowjackets advanced to the second round of the Class 2A state football playoffs as they took a 38-14 victory over Baldwyn on the road Friday.

Union improved to 8-4 with the victory. They will host Calhoun City Friday night. The Wildcats beat Riverside 47-6 in the first round. They will enter the game vs. Union with a 8-4 record.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“Calhoun City is a very good team,” Union Coach Brad Breland said. “They are very athletic and they will be a big challenge.”

The Yellowjackets have come a long way this season and Coach Breland has been proud of their progress.

“Our kids have grown up a lot since the end of last season,” Coach Breland said. “They have worked hard and they are playing hard. I am proud of them. I think we are in pretty good shape heading into the Calhoun City game.”

The Yellowjackets scored early and often in the first half as they took a 24-7 halftime lead.

The first score came on a one-yard run by Kenyon Clay. Henry Thornton kicked the extra point and the Yellowjackets went up 7-0.

That’s how it stood until the second quarter when Jaylon Buckley scored on a 21-yard run. Thornton’s kick was true and the Yellowjackets held a 14-0 lead.



Later in the quarter, Thornton kicked a 24-yard field goal to increase the Union score to 17-0.

Baldwyn then got on the scoreboard on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Blaine Martin to Jordan Eldridge. The kick was good and Union led 17-7.

Jaheim Gill returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown. Thornton’s kick was good and Union led 24-7.

The Yellowjackets added two touchdowns in the third quarter to put the game away. Quarterback Colby Ferguson ran 20 yards for a touchdown with 7:07 left in the quarter. Thornton’s kick was good and Union led 31-7.

The final Union score came when Clay ran six yards for his second touchdown of the night, Thornton’s kick was good.

Baldwyn scored in the fourth quarter when Maddux Richey connected with Jacobi Williams for a 13-yard TD pass play. The kick was good.

Union had a 23-6 advantage in first downs. The Yellowjackets rushed for 327 yards on 54 carries, and completed 4-of-9 passes for 70 yards, giving them 397 total yards in offense. Baldwyn had (-)17 rushing yards and 113 passing yards, giving them 96 total yards.

Ferguson had all of Union’s passing yards. He rushed 14 times for 103 yards, giving him 173 total yards. Jaylon Buckley rushed 19 times for 121 yards while Clay had nine rushes for 60 yards. Gill had one catch for 38 yards.

Nate Killen was the leading tackler with six while Clay had five and Peyton Posey had four.
