A growing number of business and political leaders say they support considering more than one option to finance construction of a new county hospital. Are you for:

Please select one:
A single public financing option
Including a private-sector option
Selling it!
Not doing anything. Our hospital is great.

Grand jury indicts Jackson man in string of bank robberies

A Neshoba County grand jury indicted a Jackson man last week in connection with two armed bank robberies which occurred in west Philadelphia during 2005.

The grand jury examined 105 witnesses before returning 40 indictments. Five no-bills were returned and five cases were continued for further investigation.

William Syntell Matthews, 20, of 49B Meadow Woods Lane, Jackson, was indicted for the Dec. 29 armed robbery of Cadence Bank, 1017 west Beacon St, and for the Oct. 13 armed robbery of Citizens National Bank on Central Avenue.

A cellular telephone apparently left behind in the Cadence robbery led to the speedy arrest of Matthews.

A man fitting his description and wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses entered the bank about 10 a.m. brandishing a handgun. He pulled the gun and demanded money from a teller.

A masked man brandished a handgun and robbed the Citizens National Bank’s Westside Branch on Central Drive at about 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 13 of an undisclosed amount of money.

Bank President Jackie Long said shortly after the robbery that the man got money from one teller, then made everyone get down on the floor while he exited the bank. The man apparently left with an accomplice who picked him up, he said.
