57th Choctaw Fair promises four days of family excitement

Visitors to the 57th annual Choctaw Indian Fair which starts today will be entertained by chart-topping country, rock and native groups.

The four-day celebration of Choctaw culture will include arts and crafts, dance, native foods and world championship stickball.

Today’s highlight will be the Choctaw Indian Princess pageant will gets under way at 7 p.m. at the amphitheater.

Tribal Chief Phillip Martin will officially open the fair at 6 p.m. which will include the presentation of colors by the Choctaw Color Guard, the national anthem, prayer to the Great Spirit and introduction of special guests.

The fair will continue through Saturday.

Gates open today at 11 a.m. with the midway carnival, the Choctaw Museum of the Southern Indian and all exhibits halls open daily.

New country music standout Craig Morgan will take the stage Thursday at 7 p.m. with hits including his Top 10 single “Almost Home.”

At 8:30 p.m., Tracy Byrd, will be in concert with top songs such as “Holdin’ Heaven.”

Friday brings to the stage the Classic Rock All Stars at 7 p.m. featuring performers from some of the most famous bands in classic rock history including Sugarloaf, Blues Image, Iron Butterfly, Alice Cooper, Rare Earth and Cannibal and the Headhunters.

At 8:30 p.m., Tracy Lawrence performs favorites such as “Can’t Break It To My Heart.”

Top Native American act Medicine Dream takes the stage at Saturday at 7 p.m. Topping off fair entertainment will be Dwight Yoakam, at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. His hits are numerous and include top sellers such as “Hillbilly Deluxe.”

Tickets for all acts and other fair activities including Choctaw culture, stickball, exhibits, dancing are $15 for adult season passes, $10 for adult day passes, $10 for student season passes, $5 for student day passes.
