pays tribute to Chief Phillip Martin tonight
Mississippi Public Broadcasting will air a television special tonight in honor of former Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Chief Phillip Martin beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Martin died Thursday. He was 83.
The 30-minute program will feature an interview with Martin from a 2002 episode of MPB's "Conversations" in which he discussed with host Gene Edwards his lifetime of work on behalf of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
"The cultural and economic impact Chief Martin had on not only the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians but also the state of Mississippi is profound. We will miss him as a leader and friend," said MPB Executive Director Judy Lewis.
"MPB is pleased that we have file footage of the Chief that has enabled us to provide a small but important tribute to him and his life's work of dedicated service."
Martin, who was born March 13, 1926, in Philadelphia, served as Tribal Chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians from 1979 to August 2007.
