This week, Neshoba Central graduate Donnie Tabb will come to a crossroad in his life, and either direction he decides to take won't be bad.
Tabb, a five-year starter at Neshoba Central, has signed to play college football and baseball at East Central Community College. However, he is also on the list of several Major League baseball teams and could be drafted in this week's draft. The draft started Tuesday and will run through Thursday or until the 30 teams stop making selections.
"It's exciting," said Tabb in an interview prior to the Mississippi Cross-Diamond Club's high school all star game which was held at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Saturday. "I've been told I could go in between the 10th and 15th round.
"It is going to depend on the situation and what is being offered. I will look at it and make my decision."
Not that he is being choosy but if Tabb had his choice, he would love to go to the Boston Red Sox. But he understands that it is usually a long road to the Big Leagues, especially when you are coming out of high school.
"I know it won't be easy," Tabb said. "It will take a lot of work. But if this happens and I sign, I am ready to give it my all."
Tabb has always played football and baseball but he admits that his favorite sport is baseball. During his senior year, he went 7-3 and had over 85 strike outs. But as a potential major leaguer, he is being looked at as a shortstop.
And if he doesn't sign with the majors, he is looking forward to a good career at East Central and then who knows what.
"I like East Central," Tabb said, "I really haven't talked to anyone. I am waiting to see what happens."
Tabb was a member of the North team which dropped a 9-4 decision to the South. In the 1A-2A-3A game, the North took a 6-4 decision.
Tabb said he enjoyed his time with all-stars.
"I made some new friends, Tabb said. "We were at Hinds Community College and we had to practice in the gym a few times because of the rain.
"We had a nice banquet on Friday night and everyone had a good time."
The 4A-5A proved to be an uphill battle for the North as the South scored four runs in the fourth and held on for the victory.
In the 1A-2A-3A game, the North scored two in the fourth, one in the eight and three in the ninth. The South scored two in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
