JUST AMONG FRIENDS
By RACHEL EVANS

Brenda Matthews did a cross-stitch for me years ago which reads, “The very best place to be is in a loving family.”

Bonnie McLain Turk’s loving family roped off East Jefferson last Saturday afternoon (with a little mayoral pull) and included friends and neighbors as they celebrated Bonnie’s 70th birthday. Hostesses for the festive occasion were Mac and Adriana Burt, along with Bonnie’s children whose presence was as much a surprise as the party.

They were Bobby Turk and Karen Hirschberg of Boston, Mass., Gregg and Harlen Turk of Manchester, Md., Rob and Caroline Robinson of Birmingham and Suzanne Turk of Dallas. Special guests were Bonnie’s siblings, John McLain, her twin brother Bobby (Bud) and Joann McLain, Hilda Tichnell, Sue and Trigger Young and a number of nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

The food was as delicious as the names “Mac and Adriana” imply. While Suzanne took her mother to Jackson during the day, the party-makers set up a tent and moved in barbecue grills for chicken and corn, deep fat fryers for oysters and huge pots for boiling crawfish and potatoes. They filled the street with music and round table seating for the honoree and her guests.

Lucy Hays was treated to lunch on Feb. 24, the day of her 85th birthday, by her daughter, Jean Marshall, and niece, Fran Marshall. The celebration continued on Feb. 27 when Jean and Fran, assisted by Lucy’s daughter-in-law Mary Marshall, entertained for Lucy at a beautiful Sunday afternoon tea party from 2 until 4 in Fran’s home on Magnolia.

Family members attending were Jean Marshall and Fran Marshall of Philadelphia, Ray and Mary Marshall of Biloxi, Sara and Darth Cumberland of Florence, Peggy McMichael of Clinton, Jimmy Blum of Baton Rouge, La., Charles and Neva Freeburg of Pearl, Miriam Hardy of Philadelphia, Gwen Maness of Little Rock, Benjie, Leigh Carol and Kate Marshall of Philadelphia, Cora and Bob Roberson of Bailey, Richard Smith of Philadelphia, Johnny and Daisy Smith and Lora Smith of DeKalb, W.L. Smith of Little Rock, Judi, Gary and Drew Sullivan, Ruby, James and Lynn Weathers of DeKalb.

Friends attending included Milton and Rose Beatty of Baton Rouge, La., Rachel Evans, David and Pam Fulton, Brown Gray, Rev. and Mrs. Joyce Hill, Joyce Hunter, Abby Jim Payne, Janice Payne, Maxine Posey, Creasey Richardson, Mary Temple, Wanda Waddell and Bobbie Welch, all of Philadelphia.

Following the party, Lucy, Sara and Darth, Peggy, Ray and Mary, Fran and Milton and Rose Beatty spent the night at the Golden Moon. Lucy shared honors at dinner that evening at Phillip M’s with Mary Marshall who was cheated of a birthday this year, having been born on Feb. 29.

Jean Mills Yacobucci of Holidaysburg, Penn. and Bob-o Mills of Waterbury, Conn. have been “home” for a visit with Larry and Brenda Mills and other family members. While here Larry, Jean and Bob-o went to Jackson to see their brother, Ronnie Mills.

They also visited their longtime close friends, Lallah Miles Perry, Margaret Perry and Pippa Perry Jackson. “There was a Perry, Pippa, Margaret, Pete and Richard for every Mills, Larry, Jean, Bob-o and Ronnie,” Lallah told me. “We enjoyed their visit so much!”

Kara Loper and Alain Kabore’, who were wed last September, were honored at a dinner party Tuesday, Feb. 15 in the home of Roberta and David Byars on Edgewater Drive. Greg and Brenda Nowell and Stan and Debby Yates assisted in entertaining.

Sharing the evening with Kara and Alain were Ryan and Abby Jenkins, Joey and Beth Kilgore, Clay and Jeri Ann Stegall, Wright and Leslie Griffis, Patrick and Jessica Mooney and Greg and Ann Marie Carlyle. Entertainment? “They were it!” Roberta told me. “They sat at the table long after dinner just laughing and talking. We all had such a good time.”

“Philadelphians” Wayne Herrington and Jerry Bishop were among the first team of Mississippi Baptist disaster relief volunteers to work in tsunami-ravaged southeast Asia.

They have returned to Mississippi after nearly two weeks of medical assistance, feeding victims and training local residents on the continued use of the mobile kitchens they staffed. “We had to be flexible and ready to do anything necessary,” said Don Gann, consultant in the Men’s Ministry Department of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board.

“I believe we opened doors of good will and gave the people a true vision of what Christians are like.”

Wayne, a member of Highland Church in Meridian, is the son of Christine and G.W. Herrington. Jerry, the son of Lavada and James Bishop, is pastor of First Church in Lauderdale. Wayne told his mother that the destruction was so much worse than it looked on television.

“Would you go back?” she asked. “In a heart beat,” was Wayne’s instant reply. “Jerry has been on many such missions,” his father told me, “having been to Russia once!”

Ask anyone who attended the Meridian Little Theatre’s production of “Whose Wives Are They Anyway” and they start laughing. “There was never a moment in the play to stop laughing,” Suanne Adams told me. Suanne, Tommie Banks, Alene Griffith and Pat Trest attended the opening performance on Friday evening. Gene and Rhonda Tolbert and Helen Tolbert and Loretta Clark and Frances Blackwell were among those laughing all the way home Sunday afternoon. The Tuesday night entourage from Philadelphia included Doris Vowell, Janice Payne, Abby Jim Payne, Jeanene Porter, Minnie Jean Fortenberry, Linda Simler, Creasey Richardson, Addie Lee White, Ray Fleming, Edna Moore, Myrtis Richardson and Ada Mooney and Barbara Ellingburg, Pat Mioton, Rosanell Phillips and Suanne Adams. That’s right. Suanne went twice.

The lady golfers at the Philadelphia Country Club are meeting tomorrow evening, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the clubhouse to organize for summer play. If you are a member of the club and are interested in golf, you are cordially invited to attend. Come on out. We’ll eat (food will be provided) and have fun!
