Fair 2009 will be remembered, among many other things, as the year rain kept the porch swing cushions inside the cabin, and the year the continuity of the Fair could be counted in baby beds.
In the Burnett's Cabin 216-A there were six babies under the age of three! Bill and Debi Burnett came from Benton, Debi's first Fair in 25 years. The fact that she "had a blast" was swayed by a grandmother's heart who had four of her grandchildren in the cabin. Clint and Shannon Burnett Brown, Noah, 3, and Emma, 8 months, came from Madison, while Mark and Nikki Burnett Whitworth, Ann Shelly, 2, and Olivia, 6 months, were there from Benton. Butch, Kim and Cole Hodgins and Haigan and Haley Thompson added a baby bed for 3-month-old Reid. Randy and Mimi Taylor brought a baby bed from Brandon for 6-month-old Vaiden.
Cabin 245 (The Dobbs House) was known at the Fair this year as the "Seven under Seven" cabin on Sunset Strip. Will (almost 7), Ben (4) and Charlie (2) Adams arrived on Thursday prior to the Fair. They are the sons of Lee and Shannon Adams of Hermanville and the grandsons of Laura Dobbs Bryan. They were already in high Fair spirits when their cousins Reed (3) and Luke (1) Yates arrived on Friday. Reed and Luke are the sons of Melanie and Rob Yates of Louisville and the grandsons of Betty Dobbs Bond. Joining the five boys were Hayley (4) and Sallie Ann (8 months) Harris. The girls are the daughters of Laura and Taylor Harris, also of Louisville. Laura has been coming to the Fair with Melanie since she was a little girl. Cabin 245 claims Laura, Taylor, Hayley and Sallie Ann as part of their Fair family.
As he was going to bed in the cabin of his grandparents, Van and Kay Fulton Lucas on Sunset Strip, 9-year-old Ben Gilliland said to his mother, Leigh Lucas Gilliland, "I wish we could live like this all the time. My friends are here. It is so convenient."
Agreeing with Ben was his 10-year-old brother, Charlie Gilliland, who along with our Charlie Evans across the street, made up the "3 traveling water balloon salesmen." The profitable business had the support of 5-year-old Lauren Gilliland and their dad, Chad. Also enjoying the Fair in the family cabin were Al Lucas, and Christina Little of Memphis, John and Olivia Lucas of Nashville and the Rev. Ed Saunders of Newton. Versatile young entrepreneur Charlie Gilliland won second place in the talent contest. He accompanied himself on the guitar singing Bon Jovi's hit, "Dead or Alive."
The Fifth Wednesday Bridge Club didn't let a "washout" keep them off Beverly Hills when Billy Greenleaf and Billie Latting entertained them at the Greenleaf cabin. Arriving in the downpour for lunch and bridge were Rebecca Barnett, Alyce Belenchia, Shirley Cox, Marianne Enochs, Rachel Evans, Ray Fleming, Joyce Hardy, Sarah McKay, Carol Oliphant, Evelyn Perry, Alice Rowe, Helen Thomasson and Avon Wroble. Guests were Billie Latting's sister, Jean Barfoot Bee, and Jean Myer. Missing from the group was everyone's favorite, Frances Molpus. The best part of the party was the way Billy's children, Bill Greenleaf, Gina Latham, Patti Hood, Lisa Dyer, Becky and Greg Greenleaf and Amy Faulkner assisted their mother in entertaining and made us all feel so welcome.
Doris Perry was honored on the occasion of her 85th birthday by her children and grandchildren in their family Fair cabin in Happy Hollow. Doris greeted her guests from the swing on the front porch and they were invited into the cabin for birthday cake and ice cream by Mac, Barbara and Prentiss McLaurin of Starkville, Del, Janet, Brian and Ellen Tichnell of Petal, George, Sylvia, Lydia, Julianna and Gloria Gasa of Pensacola, and Tommy and Denise Perry of Fort Worth, Texas.
For the second year in a row the Animal House located in The City Under the Lights hosted a Tuesday Bonco game which has now achieved traditional status quo. What I've learned in covering Bonco games is that they eat really good. Hostesses Brook Clay, Martha Lewis, Debra Branning, Jamie Joiner and Erica Peebles of Cabin 738 made sure that this party was no exception. Prizes for most games, least games, most boncos, last bonco and the door prizes were divided between Fair dwellers and hostesses: Angie Fry and Emily Baysinger of Cabin 150A, Kim Butler, Judy Barnes, Betty Ann Landers and Diane Greene of Cabin 706, Jodi Haggard of Cabin 736, Allison Boatner of Cabin 136, Stephine Moore of Cabin 906, Courtni Duncan and Lasandra Stewart of Cabin 738.
Kim Yates Price dropped by the cabin just as Blair had mixed her version of "The Famous BLT Dip", recipe below:
Up to 2 cups Hellman's mayo (not lowfat)
Up to 2 cups sour cream (not lowfat)
2 packages of Real bacon bits (the finely chopped ones, not the huge chunks)
1 fresh tomato, diced
Garlic salt, to taste
Mix everything but the tomato ahead of time and let the flavors marry - the longer the better. You can add the tomato too, but it tends to get a little mushy if you put it in too early (the day you eat it is fine). Serve with Ruffles.
Kim adds green onions, 1 tablespoon prepared mustard, and a little cayenne pepper, as passed on to her by Veronica Hunter Molpus.
Kim had to make a B-I-G batch of the BLT Dip for their family cabin which had a full occupancy rating, including Kim and Cecil Price, Brenda Matthews, Ray Fleming, Pat, Emily, E.J. and Ethan Sanders, Kaelyn Luke, Madi Trapp, Melissa Miller, Bass Price, Chad Clay, Alex Galistel, Chip Johnson, Felecia and Peyton Owens, April, Bailee and Justin Fuller and Barry, Melissa, M.E. and Peyton Clark.
In the Fair cabin that Frankie and Boots Harpole and Mr. Percy Barrett built in 1988, Frankie and Boot's grandson, Andrew Bailey, has assumed top chef status. He shares his "Cream Cheese Stuffed Bacon Wrapped Jalapenos" with us:
Wash fresh jalapenos and cut off stems. Halve peppers lengthwise. Use small spoon to scrape out all seeds and pulp. Stuff with cream cheese and wrap in bacon to hold together. Toothpicks may be used. Bake peppers until bacon is crispy, turning once.
The stuffed peppers received rave reviews from the inhabitants of Cabin 209 who included Frankie Harpole, Ty, Jessica, Andrew and Simon Bailey, Lorraine and Clay Blount, Ashley Brown, Tedrick Ratcliff, Diane Stirek and Jay Whittington.
Although Boots spent Fair week at Choctaw Residential Center where he is a resident, he enjoyed all the delicious Fair food via a trusty, loving commuter service. We missed you, Boots!
Fay Wood Flint's reply to "Have you played any dominoes?" was "It's the Fair isn't it." Come evening and into the wee hours of the morning, Mexican Train Dominoes take precedent at Beth Darby's cabin in Beverly Hills. Taking revolving places with Beth and her Fair mates, Joyce Dansby and Fay Wood Flint, were Eckle and Janet Wood, Sarah McKay, Jean Myer, Romily Enochs, Eloise Stokes and her grandson Murphy, and Zane Wood Black and her granddaughter Breana Tate. Come Saturday noon, the cabin trio prepared a smorgasbord spread where the specials of the day included Lan Pickle's choice of smoked meats and Bobbie Holley's fresh vegetables. Enjoying this anticipated annual treat were Sarah McKay, Jean Myer, Rachel Evans, Mike, Mitzi, Ben and Dan Evans, Erin Kriete, Scott, Blair and Charlie Evans, Toby and Cindy Nutt, David Williams, David Ross and Eckle and Janet Wood.
On a closing note, 3-year-old Hannah Day had this to say, "The Fair is my friend. I don't want to leave my friend." Hannah is the daughter of Greg and Laura Ashley Day of Little Rock, Ark., and the granddaughter of Dickie and Barbara Day of Jackson, Tenn., all of whom were Fair guests of Nancy and Bill Yates.
