JUST AMONG FRIENDS
By RACHEL EVANS

Terry Jordan shares this exciting news with us:

Football season is right around the corner, and we have learned that former Philadelphia High School standout, Alex Dees, will be inducted into the University of Memphis Hall of Fame. The ceremony is to be held Sept. 18, 2009, on the university campus.

Alex was a two-time All Missouri Valley Conference All Star and All American his senior season. He was also chosen to participate in the North-South Shriner's All Star Game held in Miami, Fla. at the conclusion of his illustrious career.

Congratulations, Alex!

If you were passing First United Methodist Church on Main Street Sunday morning, Aug. 9, you might have thought you were witnessing the great exodus when Moses led his people out of Egypt. Or perhaps a re-enactment of Abraham's pillage of Sodom and Gomorrah when God instructed Abraham to take the spoils of the two cities to Melchizedek in Jerusalem. Here, in fact, is the real story. At the close of the morning worship service, Leah Stinson, lay leader, announced that the sanctuary was to be completely stripped of all accessories in preparation for the renovation to begin early Monday morning. Immediately, like little toy soldiers or ants on a sugar trail, everyone - young and old, men, women and children - came out of the sanctuary carrying hymnals, Bibles, pencils, altar cloths, flags, banners, the altar cross, candlesticks, altar kneeling pads, pew cushions, everything! to the gym.

As Maxine Posey wrote her son, John, who is stationed in Iraq, "For sure it was a Charlie Brown parade marching to Zion. I will always remember Summer (John's sister) carrying one of the big brass vases full of fresh flowers, with an altar pad clamped under one arm, to the gym." And we will continue to remember you, John, and others like you, who are away from your churches on Sunday, serving our country to assure that America remains "one nation under God."

Nathan Cumberland and Mallary Taylor's engagement was celebrated "before something old and something blue" at a wedding shower in the family's Fair Cabin 202, "one of their favorite spots," on Sunday night of the Fair. The party was hosted by Nathan's "girl cousins", Virginia Cox, Jessica Dennis, Erin Yoste, Jamie Lee Williams, Michele Mitchell, Leslie Crews, Amber Reeves, Ashley Vares and Arrah Addison. Nathan and Mallary will be married Dec. 19 in the First United Methodist Church in Newton.

Katy McClenahan reached the exciting age of 21 on July 12, 2009, while living in our Capitol City. Katy received college credit - and pay! - working as an intern for Human Resources Director, Deanne Walberg, at the corporate home office of First Heritage Credit Corporation in Ridgeland. She shared an apartment with "best friend" Charlotte Miller, also of Philadelphia, who was working at Seattle Drip Company in Florence. Katy is a senior at Ole Miss and Charlotte a senior at Mississippi College.

Jesus said, "Let the little children come unto Me." That sounded good to 2-year-old Mary Logan Clark. There was only one catch. She wanted

Poppy to come, too. In the arms of her parents, Molly and Todd Clark, to receive infant baptism during the morning worship service at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Ridgeland, Mary Logan raised a loud audible plea for Poppy to join her at the baptistry. Jeff Clark, as Poppy, was torn between polishing his grandfather's crown and hiding under the pew! Others sharing this special day that they will never let Mary Logan forget were her grandparents, Sally and Jeff Clark of Madison and Angie Cossitt of Clinton; great-grandparents Babs and Wayne Kirkland and Ginger and Kelly Paul Clark of Philadelphia and Nancy and Charles Wilbanks of Kossuth; and aunt and uncle Ashley and Davis Quick of Birmingham.

Oops! I got my Bettys mixed up. The greetings Frankie and I received at the Fair through Betty Roberts of Pickwick were from Guy and Betty Davis Brandon, not Betty Gilmore. They were both great Betty friends!

Max and Virginia West have returned from a July 5-18, 2009 trip to Scotland, England and Ireland. They traveled with Virginia's sisters, Dorothy Sheen of Vicksburg and Thelma Beard and her husband, Tommy, of Ocean Springs. Dorothy's daughter, Virginia Miller of Clinton, was part of the family entourage.

On a note of local interest, Virginia Miller plays the organ at the United Methodist Church in Clinton where our local, Michael Hedgepeth's twin brother, Mitchell Hedgepeth serves as pastor. Michael and Mitchell's father was a Methodist minister. We thank Virginia and Max for sharing the story with us.

We started our international flight when we flew out of Newark, N.J. to Glasgow, Scotland. We arrived Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. MS time) and were pretty tired but watching a sunset across the Canadian Maritime Provinces and then the very first rays of sun peeping above the horizon above the North Atlantic truly were visions of God's amazing power! We were met at the airport by a Globus representative and the adventure began. We joined our tour director and traveling companions for a welcome dinner at the hotel at 6 p.m. Our 35 fellow travelers were from the United States, Canada and Australia.

We left Glasgow Tuesday to begin our Celtic adventure. We went to Inverness, Edinburgh, England Lake District, Chester, North Wales where we boarded a ferry to cross the Irish Sea to Dublin, Ireland. From there we went to Kildare, Blarney, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Limerick, Cliffs of Moher, Galaway, Sligo, Derry, Northern Ireland - Giant's Causeway - and Belfast. We boarded a ferry in Belfast and crossed the North Channel to Stranraer on to the west coast of Scotland and back to Glasgow.

We visited the Irish National Stud at Kildare, whose thoroughbreds command respect on the racecourses of the world. The landscape was so beautiful and I can't begin to describe all the castles we visited and the Ruins. On our trip to Italy in 2007 we did lots of walking and on this trip we did lots of riding. We only stayed two nights at two places (Edinburgh and Dublin) so we stayed on the go. It gets dark over there about eleven o'clock at night and daylight at about 4.
