Leake baseball begins district action

The Leake Academy baseball team kicked off district play this past week, dropping two out of three games to Wayne Academy.

Leake will return to play this week with another three-game district series with Simpson. Game 1 of the series is Tuesday at Madden with game 2 at Simpson on Thursday. Game 3 of the series is set for Friday at Madden.

Wayne 6, Leake 1

The Jaguars pulled away late and took a five-run win over the Rebels on Saturday to take the series win on Saturday. 

Wayne outhit Leake 8-5 in the contest. Gage Warren was 2-for-3 with a double while Mathan Weaver doubled. Rhett Stovall singled and drove in a run while Rece Atkinson had Leake’s other hit. 

Stovall started on the mound and pitched four innings and was tagged with the loss. Stovall gave up three runs on five hits while striking out two. Matthew Nowell pitched one inning and gave up three runs on three hits and a walk. Jack Harkins pitched a scoreless inning to finish up for the Rebels. 

Leake 8, Wayne 7

The Rebels drew 12 walks, including a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh to even the series on Thursday. 

Wayne jumped on starter Jack Harkins early, scoring five runs in the top of the first and added single runs in the third and fourth to go up 7-0. But Leake scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the margin to 7-5. 

In the seventh, Harkins walked to start the inning and Tyler Winstead reached on an error. A walk to Camden Marble loaded the bases by Leake. After a strikeout, Gage Warren ground out to second to score a run and cut the Wayne lead to 7-6. After an intentional walk to Rece Atkinson to lead the bases again, Mathan Weaver walked to tie the game and Rhett Stovall walked to drive in the winning run. 

Leake had just four hits but drew 12 walks. Atkinson was 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs while Majure Chandler singled and scored a run. Charlie Brantley had Leake’s other hit with a single and scored a run. Warren walked twice and had three RBIs while Tyler Winstead scored three runs. 

Harkins started the game but didn’t get an out and allowed five runs on four hits and a walk. Caden Stovall came in and pitched four innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out two. John Donovan pitched the next two innings and didn’t give up a hit or a walk while striking out two. Matthew Nowell pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the win.

Wayne 1, Leake 0

The Jaguars walked off the win in the bottom of the seventh on Tuesday to take game 1 of the series.

Wayne scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.

Leake had five hits in the contest. Mathan Weaver was 2-for-3 in the contest while Gage Warren had a triple. Charlie Brantley and Rece Atkinson had Leake’s other hits. 

Atkinson started on the mound and had his best outing of the season, going six innings and scattering five hits and a walk while striking out eight. Rhett Stovall came into the game in the seventh and got one out before giving up the game winner.
