Rebels lose to Madison St. Joseph on the diamond 9-7

The Leake Academy baseball team only got in one game last week.

The Rebels traveled to Madison St. Joseph on Monday and dropped a 9-7 decision to the Bruins in their only action last week. 

Last Friday’s game against Tri-County on Friday was rained out. 

Leake, now 2-4-1 on the season, will host St. Joseph on Monday and then play at Newton County Academy on Friday. The following week, Leake will play in the East Central Community College Invitational. On Monday, March 11, Leake will play Louisville at 10 a.m. and then play Ethel at 12:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Leake will play Mendenhall at 12:30 p.m.

The Rebels weren’t able to hold onto an early lead as the Bruins took a two-run win on Monday.

Leake started fast with five runs in the first inning and one in the second. But St. Joseph scored one in the first and five in the second to tie the game at 6-6. Each team scored a run in the fourth while the Bruins scored two in the sixth to take the win.

St. Joseph outhit Leake 15-8 in the contest. Rece Atkinson was 3-for-4 in the contest with a double, triple and one RBI. Charlie Brantley was 2-for-5 with two runs scored while Rhett Stovall, Tyler Winstead and Jackson Harkins each singled and scored. Grayson McDonald, Mathan Weaver, Jon Donovan and Matthew Nowell all had RBIs. Harkins also had two stolen bases. 

Atkinson started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up seven runs on 11 hits and two walks while striking out two. Stovall pitched 2 1/3 innings and took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. Warner Young pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one hit while striking out two.
