Authorities warn of icy road conditions

A gas truck that slid off the road blocking the roadway on Highway 19 North this morning took about an hour to dislodge, authorities say as they warn motorists to avoid leaving their houses if possible.

Sheriff Eric Clark said his office was notified that a Herring gas truck was stuck and stopped in the roadway on Highway 19 North near the intersection with Marty Stuart Drive around 9;55 this morning.

“Probably took about an hour to get him going again,” Clark said.

Clark said that portion of the road was likely impassable due to ice and would be for some time.

“We are asking people to stay at home unless they absolutely have to leave the house,” Clark said. “I think the sunshine has given some people a false sense of security.”

Darrell Wilson with Neshoba County Emergency Management said they had had several reports of motor vehicle accidents due to icy conditions this morning.

“We still have ice on roads, highways and bridges,” He said. “Just asking people not to drive if you don’t have to, if you do have to drive please slow down, leave plenty of distance between your car and other vehicles.”

Clark said vehicles he has seen on the road appear to be driving slowly and carefully. He said his office has had reports of incidents due to the ice “scattered across the county” but noted none have resulted in serious vehicle damage or injury.

Clark noted in addition to his deputies and various county and city offices the Mississippi Department of Transportation and Mississippi Highway Patrol have units in the area as well ready to assist in situations where they are needed.

Clark noted MDOT crews were spreading salt on the roadway near where the gas truck was stuck.

Area schools also announced closures due to the cold weather.

Philadelphia PD was warning of icy conditions on Tuesday morning.
