After an 8-4 win over Hamilton in the first game of the Class 2A North Series, Union just needed one win on Saturday.

And after a two-hour wait just north of Starkville after a bus breakdown, Union went scoreless for 6 2/3 innings in game 2 of the series. 

Union then scored three straight runs with two outs in the top of the seventh and took a 3-1 win over Hamilton to sweep the series.

Union now advances to the Class 2A North State finals. 

Union 8, Hamilton 4

The Lady Yellowjackets jumped out to an early lead dominated the Lady Lions to take a four-run win in the series opener. 

Hamilton scored one in the top of the first while Union scored two in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second. Leading 3-1, Union added five in the fifth and led 8-1. Hamilton added three runs in the sixth for the final margin. 

Union banged out 11 hits in the game and used a five-run fifth inning to take the four-run win. Lacee Bishop was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs while Lauryn Roebuck was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Aspen Lovern was also 2-for-3 while Alanee Wheeler had a solo home run. Destiny Moulds, Elle Killen and Maggie Atkinson each doubled and scored a run while Landry Hanna singled and drove in a run. 

Wheeler pitched all seven innings for Union, giving up four runs with only one earned. She gave up three hits and three walks while striking out a season-high 16.

Union 3, Hamilton 1

Down to their last out, the Lady Yellowjackets scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the win. 

Hamilton scored one run in the second and led 1-0. But Union scored three in the top of the seventh to take the win. Elle Killen reached on an error and then Destiny Moulds was hit by a pitch. Lacee Bishop then reached on an error by the shortstop and Killen scored to tie the game. Landry Hanna then singled to right field to scored Moulds and Bishop and give Union the lead. Hanna had both of Union’s hits, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Abigail Cleveland started in the circle, pitching six innings and giving up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Alanee Wheeler pitched the last inning to secure the win for the Lady Yellowjackets.
